Website Design

Nowadays, you don’t need to be a professional website designer to create a fully functioning – and great-looking – website.

Thanks to the numerous website building platforms that are now readily available for everyone to use, anyone can create a stunning and effective website, often in only a few hours.

You don’t need any prior experience to create your own site this way. If you can handle a mouse and a keyboard, then you could have your new website up and running in next to no time. Of course, it helps if you already understand a few basic design elements, but even if you have no technical knowledge at all, creating your brand new website is much easier than it sounds.

To get you started, we’ve set out a few points for you to keep in mind:

Learn as you go

Drag and drop technology makes light work of putting together your brand new website. Look for a website builder that uses simple, plain language, as that will enable you to get started without having to learn a whole new terminology.

Your website builder platform should provide you with a selection of basic templates. Find one that resonates, then use the template as the basis for your new website. And don’t worry about going wrong! Any mistakes can easily be put right and it’s often only by making mistakes that we actually learn anything.

Play with HTML and CSS

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, which is the type of code used in website creation. Most website builders don’t require you to have a good understanding of HTML, but the more you can learn, the more you can adapt and refine your website to reflect your own tastes.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, which apply design elements to your web pages. Once again, there’s no obligation to learn the language, but the more you discover about coding, the more professional your website will look.

Familiarise yourself with SEO

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is crucial if you want prospective customers to be able to find your site online. Good SEO encourages search engines to place your site higher up in the rankings so more web visitors get to see it. But it’s not just about selecting and promoting specific keywords. Good SEO begins at the website design stage, so you need to make sure that you make full use of Alt tags and headers, for example.

SEO is a huge subject, so take some time to read up as much as you can about it. Incorporating best SEO practices into the creation of your website will greatly enhance your rankings. So make sure that you optimise your site for easy access across all devices, including smartphones. Check that your web pages load super fast too. Web visitors don’t like to wait for longer than three seconds; any longer than this and they’ll head elsewhere and slow pages will impact your search rankings too.

Google is your friend

Whether you want to learn a coding language, find out how to create a wireframe for your website, or you just want to brush up on your SEO skills, Google is an excellent source of information. Learn as you go, and study website design elements in your spare time. Your website will thank you for it!
